John Shisler

John Shisler, son of Conrad and Anna Schissler, moved from Pennsylvania with the offer of free land from the Canadian Government. He moved, sometime between 1804-1807, to what was then known as the Niagra District in Upper Canada, which is now Welland County, Ontario. He is the first Schisler to become a Canadian.

There are county maps available of the area at that time, providing land property ownership. We can pinpoint the first property that John Shisler was given to a piece of land that is owned by Abraham Shisler or next to it. See the map below - the area is along Lake Erie on the very right.

This information was provided by Bill Schisler, distant Ontario cousin. He offers further information about properties of other direct descendants.

The date the maps reference is likely 1878.

For Peter Shisler, go to Bertie Township and see the property just above Stevensville, just below the township line.

For George Shisler:

  • go to Willoughby Township, see the property between the second and third road from the left, above the third road from the bottom.
  • go to Crowland Township, see the property at Concession Three Lot Nine. He later bought the farm just below three on Concession Four Lot Nine, that belonged to Warren Rock.
