From Pennsylvania USA to Ontario Canada

We know from our History of the Shisler Family document that John Schisler emigrated to Ontario from Pennsylvania. See page 7 of the Canadian Branch of the original Canadian Branch as it provides a record of  John Schisler as "our grandfather and Canadian ancestor, son of Conrad and Anna Schissler." I will not repeat what is in that record, but suffice to say John eventually moved his family from upstate New York to Welland county, Ontario settling near the Niagara River/Niagara Falls. First purchase of property was in Humberstone. John and his wife were recorded as being buried in the "Beach cemetery near Schisler's Point."

I found this Mennonite document that provides a great history of the movements from USA into Ontario. As well, no evidence has been found linking the Schislers to the Mennonite religion. No Schislers were listed as ordained and no record of being interred in a Mennonite cemetery. In addition, although the original ancestor, Conrad Schissler, married a Mennonite in Anna Lang/Long they were not married in a Mennonite church.

It does not appear that John Schisler was a United Empire Loyalist. No reference is made in J.W. Shisler's summary. It appears his dad, Conrad Schissler, was a Revolutionary soldier, but his son came along after that war. Future descendants of John Schisler including our James George Currie described themselves as "German Methodists." I found other documents confirming a number of previous generations listed themselves as "German Methodists." George Ivan Schisler never continued with this religious affiliation.

When you go to the part of the document titled "Property Holders in Bertie Township 1865" you will find our ancestors listed. John Schisler and his sons names are listed, plus some in-laws of different surnames. All the Schisler names listed are related to John.

There is a Schisler's Point (Shisler's Point) on Lake Erie as well as a Schisler's Road. Very certain, both are named after our distant ancestors given they were the original settlers in that country. Another picture of Schisler Road. Our direct ancestor George Schisler was the Collector of Customs at the Port of Entry "Schisler's Point" on Lake Erie for a number of years until his wife became sick (see page 42 of History of the Shisler Family).

Interesting note courtesy of Betty Harley (her grandmother was Ida May Schisler - sister to Currie and Hiram), there were no Schislers living on Schisler Road as they all lived one road to the south being Lyon's Creek Road. This is where "the old Schisler red brick homestead still stands." She believed it was named after George Schisler and his many descendants who built their homes on the surrounding farm land owned by him.
